Dragons and Clouds

We lay amid the grass and looked at clouds.
It was a dream—born of mists and wishes and hopes
I saw a dragon. You saw a swan.
You never wondered why.

You with your dreams of romance.
Clouds are dreams and like swan's down, soon dispelled
Flurries, drawing veils across the sun
Seeking to hide reason in smothering pleasure
They fade, they shred, they are gone.

He is my dragon. Constant through time's relentless march
His wings of green command my heart
Wrap around my soul.
Dispel the shards of cotton-floss
His blood calls to mine--a flame which burns
Through the dross of dreams. Leaves them faded, wan,
As if they never were.

Clouds are soon dissipated.
Swans die, and dreams, faded threads of a tapestry
That never was.
Snows melt,
Spun-sugar, pretty to the eye
Sweet on the tongue
With no savor.

They're born, they loft, they die.
Phantoms.

But dragons--
Dragons live forever.
